Cordoba - Part of our Europe 2005 trip After leaving Granada, we travelled by car to Cordoba and stayed across the street from the Mosquito. I think this must be on of the most spiritual places on earth. Originally a Roman temple, later a Visigoth church, the Arabs built one of the most spectacular Mosques in the world on the site. Later, when the area was taken by the northerners, the doorways were closed in and a Roman Catholic Cathedral was built in the center, the most holy place of the mosque. The Cathedral was later expanded to take over the space. When the ruling monarch at the time was asked whether they should construct the Cathedral, he granted his per mission, but when he finally travelled to Cordoba and saw what they had done, he said "If I had know what you intended to do, I would never have granted permission. What you have built can be found all over the kingdom, but what you have destroyed can be found nowhere else on earth." Charles V considered the Cathedral a travesty because it covered such beauty. Many people feel the same, but it's all part of the Mosquito history now and although it would be amazing to see the Mosque in it's original glory, it is amazing to see the opulence with which the Catholic Cathedral is outfitted.
